“Embrace every opportunity to explore, collaborate, and grow”
Dr. Yomani Sarathkumara
A Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Institute for Molecular Bioscience, The University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia (PhD in Molecular Immunology)
During my MPhil studies, I was privileged to be co-supervised by mentors at C4RNHK on a collaborative research project involving C4RNHK, the Department of Microbiology at the University of Peradeniya, and Hokkaido University, Japan. My time at C4RNHK (2015–2018) was instrumental in shaping my research career. The Centre provided me with opportunities to participate in fieldwork, collecting blood samples and clinical data from CKDu patients from remote agricultural communities, to conduct comprehensive laboratory analyses. This work led to the first study to report hantavirus exposure as a significant risk factor for CKDu in Sri Lanka, earning the President’s Award for Scientific Research in 2019.
Currently, my research focuses on identifying antibodies as biomarkers for Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV)-associated lymphomas and predictive markers for EBV-specific T-cell immunotherapy in EBV-lymphoma patients, and also in EBV-associated autoimmune diseases. The skills, insights, and passion for translational research that I gained during my time at C4RNHK continued to guide my scientific journey.
